Ravena Dealership Shuts Down Without Notice

RAVENA - A longtime Albany County car dealership is no more. Marshall's shut down Monday without warning.

About 30 employees of Marshall's Transportation in Ravena reported for work Monday morning only to be told they didn't have a job. When confronted by NewsChannel 13, the owner wouldn't say why the dealership was closed.

"We just came to work today and they told us we were closed down," employee Katy Modcelewski said.

Modcelewski worked for human resources at Marshall's GMC-Subaru. She says she was one of only a handful of employees allowed to work Monday to clean up and clean out before they were through for good.

Marshall's has been in business for about 80 years. Until about four years ago it was owned and run by the well-respected Marshall family.

It was eventually purchased by David Evans. A former employee says last month Evans shut down the Chrysler-Jeep part of the business in the same way as Monday's closing. About 20 employees lost their jobs at that time.

With Monday's closing, the number of people out of work is more than 50.

Few employees NewsChannel 13 encountered felt at liberty to speak. When Evans was approached he was not cordial.

"Leave the property. There is no comment," he said.

Bill Asprion worked at Marshall's for about four years and left a year ago. He says he feels sorry for employees and customers and for the Marshall family who worked so hard for decades before selling to Evans. However, he's not at all surprised by the turn of events.

"As it stands now he owes me a decent sum of money and I've had to take legal action to recoup the money. It's been well over a year and I haven't received any money yet," Asprion said.

There are hundreds of new and used cars on the Marshall's lot. There is no word on what happens to customers who had cars in for repair or had parts or cars on order.

One customer who had a car that was to be repaired there now says he'll have to have it towed it to another dealership.
